power failure in London’s underground this week? Thousands of passengers had to
evacuate their trains that had become stranded on the tracks in the pitch
black. Around 2,000 people had to trek through the tunnels in order to get to
safety.
On Monday the Jubilee line’s failure meant people were
forced to walk for 20 minutes through the dark tunnels in order to reach the
nearest destination. The track that failed was between St John’s Wood and Baker
Street, and was stranded for more than two hours. Three trains overall were caught
between these two stations while a fourth became stranded at Swiss Cottage and
a fifth at Westminster.
Mayor Boris Johnson has now been urged to lead an
investigation after many campaigners claimed the disaster was an “utter
disgrace”. The next day even more passengers were stuck on the Victoria line
because of a “defective” engine between Seven Sisters and Finsbury Park. London
underground managing director Mike Brown was forced to apologise for the
disastrous two days for TfL and said, “I know that having to walk along the
track through a tunnel is distressing. It is not what our customers should have
to expect and is something we always seek to avoid.”
Let us know if you were caught among the chaos and what you
think should be done so that these consistent problems on London’s underground
can be avoided in future.
