Pimlico Gardeners Take Part in Second Annual Event

Residents of the Abbots Manor Estate recently competed for the
honour of being crowned the winner of Pimlico’s most “budding” gardener. There
were prized flowers, herbs and vegetables, all grown by the residents
themselves, on display for expert judge Jim Buttress to select the winners
from.
This is the estate’s second
annual gardening competition. Last year residents on the estate were encouraged
to ‘adopt a box’ from a host of planters outside Glastonbury House.
Among the winners this year was
Mushir Galali who received a special mention for his unique planter box which
contained aromatic herbs that are usually found in his native Kurdistan.
Other winners were a box that
housed a rhubarb plant, a special herb box that included rosemary and sage, and
marigold boxes that had been planted and grown by older people’s charity Open
Age.
Judge Buttress, who also judges
at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show,
was highly impressed with this year’s competitors and said: “The planters show
a marvellous cross-section of what you can do in containers and boxes.
“This area would be a concrete
jungle without what residents have created here and they should be very proud.”
With such a high level of
interest shown among the residents an official gardening club is now being
considered.
