Westminster Council is considering cutting the whole of their Arts budget. This cost cutting measure will save £350,000 but at what cost? West End actors Samantha Bond, Alistair McGowan, Nickolas Grace and Abigail Thaw have signed an on-line petition against the proposal. Peter Polycarpou, Saskia Reeves, Paula Wilcox, Ian McShane, Ralf Little, Arlene Philips, Philip Hedley and Barbara Ewing have also signed the petition which has over 600 signatures. Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Westminster Labour Group, said;
"The campaign to save Westminster's arts and culture programme is growing. The whole city will be poorer through the loss of these innovative projects. It is madness for the Council to reduce community access to Westminster's wonderful array of world-class arts and culture. If anything, we should be making more of these magnificent cultural facilities and arts organisations on our doorstep, rather than reducing access to them for children, young people and the elderly."
Samuel West is Chair of the National Campaign for the Arts, read what he says about the proposal on his blog.
