Westminster Council acts to preserve skyline

Lambeth Council supports replacing Elizabeth House in York Road with two new blocks designed by Sir David Chipperfield. Westminster CIty Council does not. The new 29-storey tower threatens to destroy iconic views of the Palace of Westminster from Parliament Square. Both Westminster City Council and English Heritage oppose the scheme. London's skyline has been under attack for many years from high-rise buildings. Now Westminster Council has taken a stand against the assault on the skyline by mounting a legal challenge. Communities secretary Eric Pickles decided not to order a public inquiry into the scheme and now Lambeth's cabinet member for regeneration Councillor Pete Robbins, has written to Westminster's deputy leader Councillor Robert Davis, asking him to give up the legal challenge. He accuses Westminster City Council of wasting taxpayers money. Westminster residents, however, might disagree.
