John Walsh is celebrating after winning City Index’s Trading Academy after weeks of gruelling challenges.

Walsh, who is currently a client services executive and a trainee taxi driver, saw off stiff competition from seven rivals to take home a massive cash prize of £100,000 in the innovative web series.

Leading retail trading service City Index launched the Trading Academy in October and the competition lasted for six weeks, with the aim of showing that almost anyone trading Forex at can be successful with the right technical support and trading education.

The notional profits of each of the Trading Academy competitors were judged by an expert panel and one person was eliminated from the competition each week.

Each of the candidates chosen to compete in the inaugural Academy had varying levels of trading experience, if any, before they entered; though the panel read like a who’s who of trading experts.

City Index’s Global Chief Strategist Ashraf Laidi and Chief Technical Analyst James Chen were both present on the panel, along with City Index Chief Executive Martin Belsham for the final this week in London’s City Hall.

Along with Walsh, two other contenders made it as far as the final day: freelance journalist Ryan Oliver-Thompson and recruitment consultant Shazad Asher battled it out for the £100,000 grand prize.

Although Oliver-Thompson and Asher narrowly missed out on winning in the final, each received a City Index trading account with £5,000 to trade with for finishing as runners-up.

Walsh’s ROI was an excellent 23.6% in the last week of the Academy competition, though it was his consistency throughout that won him the prize at the end. The judging panel was particularly please with Walsh as he managed time and again to trade out of positions in which he was losing.

Belsham hailed the competition as a great success, as he said: “The Trading Academy shows that no matter what your background, with the right tools and support, anyone can learn to trade the markets.

“It was hugely encouraging to see John and the other competitors demonstrating big improvements in their trading over a matter of days and weeks, and developing the skills that will allow them to keep going beyond their Trading Academy experience.

“We hope after watching the show, people from a host of backgrounds will be inspired to give it a go themselves.”

Despite the win, Walsh has no intention of quitting his dream day job, although he does plan on continuing to trade.

Walsh said: “It’s been a great experience and I’m definitely going to be the Black Cabbie trader from now on!

“I never thought that over such a short period, I could learn so much about trading. The financial markets can seem so daunting, but the right support, anyone can develop the skills and confidence to trade.”
