Petition for banning wild animals in circus aiming for 30,000

This Thursday MPs could make a decision on whether to direct the Coalition Government in bringing a ban in place of using wild animals in circuses. And it could all depend on the power of the people.  

The Independent have been running a campaign encouraging readers and those in favour of signing their online petition, which is calling for the Government to ban wild animals from all circuses in the UK. It is hoped that 30,000 people will have signed by Thursday afternoon, which is when the MPs will meet and vote in favour of the ban. The figure currently stands at just over 28,000. 

Animal welfare groups are appealing to all members of the public to get in contact with their local MPs to make sure they will attend on Thursday and to urge them to show their support. There is a fear that MPs who initially signed the backing of the ban may not attend on Thursday because the debate takes place at a time when they would normally be returning to their constituencies.
